In a move to make the highway journey affordable and convenient, the government has taken significant steps and announced the reduction of toll rates. According to the details, the old rates of toll taxes will be impacted by up to 50 per cent under the latest rule.
It will apply to the National Highways that feature major structures that include tunnels, bridges, flyovers, and elevated corridors, and tolls will be determined on a fair basis.
Going by all the details available on the internet, and a statement from the government, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Gesture) has updated the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Under the latest amendment, it has introduced a revised formula for calculating toll charges. The changes came into effect on July 2, 2025.
Now, the toll tax will be calculated based on whichever of these two gives a lower amount.
Sounds confusing? Well, let’s understand this with an example. Let’s say there is a 40 km highway, and all of it is a structure (like a flyover or bridge).
So, now you pay half the toll compared to before! The decision has been made to make toll tax collection fairer for commuters, especially when using long flyovers or elevated roads.
