Let’s know how you can stop this fraud in your name and keep yourself safe.
How is this fraud?
The fraudsters often misuse your Aadhaar card information or its copy. They enter fake loan applications using your information, which banks or financial institutions pass. When you later apply for a loan or credit card, then you find that the loan is already running in your name, causing your Cibil score to deteriorate.
How to save yourself and what to do?
Check CIBIL score regularly (check your cibil score regularly):
This is the most important step. CIBIL score or credit report contains information about all your loan and credit card accounts.
You can check your credit score for free every year (eg Cibil, Experian, Equifax). If you see a loan or credit account in your report that you have not taken, then take action immediately.
Protection of Aadhaar (Secure Your Aadhaar):
Do not share your Aadhaar card photocopy or number with any unauthorized person or website.
If needed, use ‘masked Aadhaar’, in which your Aadhaar number does not look complete.
Use the facility to lock or unlock your Aadhaar card from UIDAI website.
Be careful about One-Time Password (OTP):
Check bank statement and SMS alerts (Check Bank Statements & SMS Alerts):
Check your bank account and credit card statement regularly. If any suspected transaction is seen, inform the bank immediately.
Read all SMS alerts to bank and Aadhaar carefully.
Monitor online activities (Monitor Online Activities):
Check the history of your Aadhaar activities on online portals (eg UIDAI or Myadhaar portal). This will let you know where your Aadhaar has been used.
What to do if a loan has been taken in your name?
Police Complaint: Immediately lodge a complaint in cybercrime cell or at the local police station. Keep a copy of the FIR with you.
Inform the bank/financial institution: Tell the bank or financial institution immediately from where the fraud loan has been taken. Also give them a copy of the FIR.
Inform the Credit Bureau: Inform all the Credit Bureau (Cibil, Experian, Equifax) so that they can remove that fraud loan from your credit report.
By adopting these precautions and being aware, you can save your Aadhaar card from fraud and keep yourself safe from financial loss.
