A taste test of the UK's best supermarket ice creams has crowned one winner with two budget alternatives named as the runner up.

In a blind-taste test survey conducted last monthbyWhich?, a total of 60 people rated the widely irresistible Magnum Classic ice creams alongside nine supermarket own labels, including Marks & Spencer, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland and others.

The brands were given in a random order so the panel didn’t know which product they were reviewing. The total score is based on flavour (50%), texture (20%), appearance (20%), and aroma (10%).

Although Magnum topped the charts, on this rare occasion, a supermarket own-label received the same total satisfaction score of 82% - and it’s £1 cheaper. The Best Buy chocolate ice cream was named M&S's Chocolate Sticks.

The site explained: “Our tasters rated them a cut above other supermarket rivals, with the majority of our ice cream lovers saying they were satisfied with the sweetness and strength of chocolate and vanilla flavours.”

Mark and Spencer’s chocolate ice creams are also on the pricier side compared to other supermarkets, but the panel was still satisfied with it being cheaper than Magnum.

In second and third place were Lidl’s Gelatelli Classic Ice Cream Sticks and Aldi’s Gianni’s Milk Chocolate Ice Creams. Both are good budget-friendly options, and Lidl’s also offer many more products compared to the rest. Lidl and Aldi also come in packs of six and four ice creams, respectively.

The last place was given to Co-Op ’s Dipper Milk Chocolate Vanilla Ice Creams, scoring a total of 69% in satisfaction. The tasters thought it wasn’t creamy enough, and it also lacked flavour. “A bit of a letdown, but not terrible,” they added.

As the UK is having a roasting summer, people will be heading to their nearest supermarket for the frozen aisle. Whether you choose M&S’ Chocolate Sticks or a classic Magnum, enjoy every bite, but be aware of its high sugar content.

Which? warned: "A full-size Magnum Classic contains 231 calories and 20g of sugar, which is two-thirds of the maximum adult 30g daily sugar limit recommended by the NHS."

Shoppers can opt for the mini versions of the ice creams with less sugar content and fewer calories - it also comes with a wider choice of flavours
