In a positive turn of events for fans, a well-liked Benidorm star has shared an update concerning a new series.
The popular ITV comedy, crafted by Derren Litten, first aired in 2007 and chronicled the adventures of British tourists at the esteemed Solana Resort.
During its successful run, the show garnered numerous awards, including BAFTAs and NTAs, securing its spot as a viewer favourite. Starring notable names like Sheridan Smith, Siobhan Finneran, and Johnny Vegas, it was a disappointment when Benidorm ended its 11-year run in 2018.
Ever since, fans have held out hope for a revival. Over the years, several stars and the creator, Derren Litten, have hinted at a possible comeback. Benidorm alum Sherrie Hewson, who portrayed Joyce Temple-Savage, has recently disclosed that fresh scripts have been written and submitted to ITV executives who are impressed by them.
Speaking at her show, An Evening With Sherrie Hewson, in Barnsley on Sunday, July 6, Sherrie mentioned: "I do know ITV have got new scripts and they love them and think they are wonderful."
However, Hewson cautioned: "The problem with Benidorm is that it's probably one of the most expensive shows ever because it's in Spain, we have a Spanish crew, we have a British crew, so it costs a fortune to make.", reports OK!.
But with its consistent high ratings and frequent airtime, Hewson seemed optimistic, concluding: "But it's on twice a day every day and those ratings are still as high as they ever were, so I think it will [return]."
A decision remains to be made, but the development of new scripts signals a promising start for the revival of this beloved comedy series.. Sherrie divulged: "And I think they [ITV bosses] love the scripts anyway and Derren said he laughed out loud when he wrote them so I don't think there's any question, it's just when."
In other news, this April, 'Benidorm' creator Derren Litten opened up about potential discussions with ITV for the beloved show's revival.
During a Facebook Live session reported by The Sun, Derren hinted: "Have I been talking to ITV in the last few months? Yes I have. Have ITV commissioned a special or a series at the moment? No. Might they in the next few weeks [or] couple of months? Yeah they might. They might."
Drawing his talk to a close, Derren further shared: "So I hope that gives you [the fans] some hope, and I hope that gives you some idea of where we are," thus adding fuel to the fire of anticipation amongst the fanbase.
