Costa has shut yet another one of its cafes in the UK. The coffee chain has closed a number of its cafes in the UK so far in 2025, with the most recent closure in Kent just five years after it first opened. Costa has shut its Whsitable cafe, which closed its doors to customers for the final time on June 29. The cafe was located on the high street in the town, and the closest other Costa to it was the drive-thru cafe at Chestfield roundabout.

The site where the Costa opened in 2020 is now being advertised by Caxtons for an annual rent of £35,000, Kent Online reports. The company has not disclosed why the latest closure happened. Customers had left online reviews of the cafe, some complaining about its appearance and its reduced opening hours. A local cafe owner described the situation as a "sign of the times" and pointed out the increased costs that businesses are currently up against.

Louis Hurst, who owns local coffee chain HatHats, told Kent Live: "I think the fact that a name as big as Costa is closing branches shows the increasing cost pressures so many businesses in our sector and beyond are facing.

"Increases to National Insurance contributions, and in our case the number of staff who now qualify for employers' National Insurance, has seen a huge hike in our employment costs - and that's before we talk about increases in rent, utilities and the goods we buy."

Costa has shut a number of cafes across the UK in 2025. Costa in Maidstone town centre shut up shop in January 2024, while its Lyme Regis branch in Dorset closed on April 24.

The coffee chain also closed branches in Stockton, Lyndhurst, Bridlington and New Forest this year. Costa has more than 2,000 cafes across the UK and Ireland.

Hurst added: "The world coffee price for green beans, for example, has also risen by over 90% in a year."

While some reviews of the recently closed Costa in Whistable were unfavourable, others praised the friendly staff and the good service, with the closure marking a blow for the high street in the town.
