The death toll from the train-school van collision in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district rose to three on Tuesday. Three schoolchildren lost their lives, while two others, including the van driver, sustained serious injuries.

The accident happened early Tuesday near Chemmanguppam village, close to Chidambaram, at a railway crossing on a frequently used road.
Cuddalore Train Accident: Here's What Happened
The van, carrying school students, was struck around 7 AM by the Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai passenger train while attempting to cross Level Crossing Gate No. 170, a non-interlocked railway gate situated between Cuddalore and Alappakkam. According to Railway officials, the gate was left open at the time of the train's arrival — a direct violation of standard safety protocol.
Southern Railway confirmed that the gatekeeper responsible has been suspended and is likely to face dismissal. A spokesperson said the gate was opened 'under pressure' from the school van driver, who insisted on crossing despite the approaching train, reporte ANI. The van was hit at high speed and dragged for about 50 feet along the tracks.
Locals rushed to the scene after hearing the collision and found the vehicle severely mangled. Two children died on the spot, while a third victim succumbed to injuries later at the Cuddalore Government Hospital. Two more, including the van driver, remain under treatment. It is said that the two children are sibilings.
District Superintendent of Police Jayakumar confirmed the toll and stated that Railway Police, State Police, and Railway Safety authorities are conducting a joint investigation to determine accountability. Authorities are examining whether procedural violations, miscommunication, or human error played a role.
Tamil Nadu CM Stalin said, "I extend my heartfelt condolences and comfort to the parents, relatives, and friends of the deceased students, Nimilesh and Sarumathi. I have instructed that high-quality medical treatment be provided to the four individuals injured in this accident and receiving treatment at the Cuddalore Government Hospital. Additionally, I have directed the Honorable Minister @MRKPanneer and the District Collector to personally visit and provide assistance."
Further, he ordered to provide Rs 5 lakh ex gratia from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the parents of the deceased children. Furthermore, he ordered one lakh rupees each for those severely injured and under treatment, and Rs 50,000 each for those with minor injuries.
