New Delhi: Lamborghini joins the league of carmakers in delaying the launch of new electric vehicles. The brand’s CEO recently revealed to Autocar that the upcoming generations of the Urus will retain a plug-in hybrid powertrain as the automaker postpones the launch of the battery-electric variant, which will not be arriving until 2035.

Stephan Winkelman has blamed the uncertainty in the regulations as the main reason for the delay, noting to Autocar that keeping the PHEV powertrain is quite “important” for both the brand and their customer. He noted that the customers will be delighted on terms that Urus will continue to have a combustion engine.

Winkelman though hasn’t given any details about the new SUV’s powertrain to the media publication. The 2025 Urus SE comes with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine with an electric motor that produces 789 bhp and 950 Nm of torque, making it the most potential version of the SUV ever.

The next generation of the Urus will arrive in 2029, as announced previously, with Lamborghini delaying the arrival of the electric version. It was previously supposed to arrive after their first electric model went on sale, but Lamborghini have already had to postpone that as well. Reports suggest that the delay may be more.

Lamborghini have already had to push back the launch of a production version of the Lanzador concept by a year, and the new timeline is thought to be 2029. There is a chance that the European Union could be making changes to their ban on combustion engines next year, with a chance that the combustion engines get a little longer lifeline in Europe.

Lamborghini also are hopeful that synthetic fuels could be powering the internal combustion engines in the future. Lamborghini aren’t the only brand who are looking for alternate plans in the ever-changing market. A number of other brands have recently recommitted to continue producing combustion engines or reducing investment in EVs like Honda.
