Mumbai: A 26-year-old man accused in a mobile theft case allegedly died by suicide in the lock-up of Sahar police station on Monday morning. According to police officials, the man, identified as Ankit Rai, reportedly hanged himself using a cloth tied to a pipe in the toilet. His body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Ankit Rai worked as a waiter and lived with roommates employed at a five-star hotel in Andheri East. The case began when his roommates filed a complaint regarding the theft of five mobile phones.

Interestingly, Ankit had also accompanied them to the police station to lodge the complaint. While three of the stolen phones were recovered during the investigation, Ankit was arrested on Sunday.

Police stated that Ankit was not a habitual offender, and further inquiry into the incident is underway.
