In a major policy update, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revised the list of accepted documents for Aadhaar registration and updates. The new guidelines, which take effect from the financial year 2025–26, aim to strengthen the Aadhaar ecosystem and prevent duplication.
A key highlight of the new rules is the "One Aadhaar per person" mandate. UIDAI has clarified that if any individual possesses more than one Aadhaar number, only the one linked to their first biometric record will remain valid. Any subsequent Aadhaar numbers will be considered invalid, regardless of how they were issued—whether due to technical errors or multiple applications.
UIDAI has officially released an amended list of documents required for Aadhaar enrolment and demographic or biometric updates. These changes fall under the First Amendment Regulations, 2025 and aim to make the process more secure and verifiable.
Here are the updated document categories:
Any one of the following documents is now accepted:
PAN Card
Voter ID Card
Driving Licence
Any Government-issued photo identity card
You can submit any of the following:
Electricity Bill / Water Bill / Gas Bill (latest)
Bank Passbook
Ration Card
Documents related to any Government Housing Scheme
Accepted documents include:
Birth Certificate
Passport
SSLC Certificate
If updating or enrolling children or dependents, these are required:
Public Distribution System (PDS) Card
MGNREGA Job Card
Birth Certificate with parent’s names
For children under the age of five, Aadhaar can be registered in two ways:
Using parent or guardian’s documents, or
By submitting supported documents independently.
This Aadhaar version for children is often referred to as the “Blue Aadhaar”. It has limited validity and must be updated with biometric data once the child turns five.
The document revisions aim to:
Eliminate duplicate Aadhaar entries
Improve verification accuracy
Ensure only valid and traceable documents are accepted
Strengthen the overall integrity of the Aadhaar system
UIDAI has also emphasized the importance of regularly updating your Aadhaar information, especially in cases of change in address, name after marriage, or changes in biometrics due to aging or medical conditions.
If you are registering for a new Aadhaar: Make sure to carry documents from the updated list only.
If you are updating Aadhaar details (name, address, etc.): Only the revised documents listed above will be accepted.
If you unknowingly have two Aadhaar numbers: Contact UIDAI immediately. Only the first Aadhaar with biometric data will be retained.
With Aadhaar being linked to essential services like banking, income tax, SIM cards, LPG subsidies, and voter registration, it's crucial to ensure your Aadhaar is valid, updated, and linked with the correct documents.
