In a bizarre yet emotional twist from Alappuzha, Kerala, a young man who stole his grandmother’s gold chain eventually returned it—only to be rewarded with ₹1,000 by the same woman he stole it from.
Theft Within the Family
The elderly woman had a habit of removing her gold chain while sleeping. Her grandson, who was known to occasionally take small sums of money from the house, took advantage of this and secretly stole her chain one night. Despite suspecting him, the grandmother refrained from filing a police complaint, fearing both the loss of her chain and her grandson's possible arrest.
Police Help Without an FIR
Instead, she approached the police unofficially, requesting help without registering an FIR. Understanding the sensitive nature of the case, the police cooperated. They discreetly handed the young man's photo to AB Thomas, secretary of the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association, who then circulated the image to local jewellers.
Failed Attempts to Sell the Chain
Soon, the grandson began visiting jewellery shops across the district to sell the chain—but every shop turned him away, recognizing him from the circulated image. In total, he approached nearly 25 jewellers, even attempting to cut and sell a part of the chain—but to no avail.
Return and Unexpected Reward
Realizing he couldn't sell the stolen gold, the young man returned the chain to his grandmother after three days. In a surprising and heartwarming gesture, the woman rewarded him with ₹1,000, perhaps grateful that the chain was returned and that he didn’t fall deeper into trouble.
