The UK is full of great places for a day out that are as beautiful as they are fascinating thanks to long and eventful histories, and Hever Castle is no exception. Located in the village of Hever in Kent, 30-miles south east of London, it began as a country house after being built in the 13th century. The gatehouse and walled bailey date to around 1270. From 1462 to 1539, it was the seat of the Boleyn family. The most famous member of this prestigious clan, Anne Boleyn, was the somewhat unfortunate executed second wife of Henry VIII until 1536.
Now owned by the Guthrie family, the castle and its stunning grounds blow visitors away. It says 421,724 people dropped by in 2023. TikToker captain.m_ decided to visit and see if it was worth the £27.50 entrance fee. "Wow. This place is incredible," he said. "The castle is fully surrounded by water. It's like an island. It's so cool." Before going inside, he was greeted by a woman dressed in period clothing, who checked his ticket.
Following a look around the castle's interior, the content creator headed to the Yew Maze, which proved tricky to navigate. "I can't lie, this is difficult," he said. Eventually, though, he made it to the centre.
After looking around the gardens, he said: "So far, this place has been a 10 out of 10. I have no complaints."
Next was a stroll around the rose garden. "Guys, this can't be real," captain.m_ said. Later, he added: "I think I see a lake at the end of this pathway, and I don't think I can handle it.
"If that's a lake at the end, I'm done." Sure enough, the a body of the River Eden homed into view. "Guys, I think I've found heaven," the video creator said.
Looking out from the Loggia, the stunned visitor added: "This is the most beautiful thing I've seen this year, and I don't think I'm done.
"Every corner I take, I'm getting attacked by nice views. It actually hurts."
Later, after walking past a part of the gardens that reminded him of Alice in Wonderland, captain.m_ dropped by the castle's water maze, and found a little waterfall.
Finally, he found the Japanese tea house, which had a seating area looking out at an "incredible" view. "We have got to talk about this bench, right here," the content creator said. "This bench is a top tier bench."
Concluding his video, he said: "I've had an incredible time. I'm so shocked at how much there is to see. I didn't think it would be this much, and I'm pretty sure I haven't seen everything. So, is this spot worth £27.50? In my opinion, yes. If you spend the whole day here, yes."
