Older drivers are paying more for car insurance cover in one UK region, according to a major new study from experts. Based on the latest data from car insurance comparison experts at Quotezone.co.uk, the UK average price of car insurance has dropped from £668 per year in April to £648 in June.

Analysis shows elderly road users over the age of 65 pay considerably less than other younger demographics. However, the data shows there is still a geographical split with motorists living in some areas paying a lot more for cover than others. There is more than £250 per year split between the cheapest and most expensive areas, showing that where motorists live is a major barometer of annual fees.

According to Quotezone data, motorists living in London are paying the highest insurance billscompared to anywhere in the country.

Over 65s with a London postcode tend to pay an average of £622.26 per year to stay on the roads.

Northern Ireland was next with elderly motorists paying a whopping £478.68 to get behind the wheel later in life.

North West England was next with annual rates at £455.28 per annum, followed by South East England (£421.50).

At the other end of the scale, Wales was the cheapest region to insure a vehicle with over 65s paying just £349.58 per year.

Quotezone stressed that moving house could be considered one of the "surprising factors" that hike up total bills.

Those who have already moved or have their heart set on a new destination can find savings by making other small adjustments to their policy.

Greg Wilson, CEO and car insurance expert at Quotezone, stressed road users would be able to find ways to cut bills.

He explained: "While we hope the cheaper insurance premiums continue throughout 2025, it's still essential that drivers take steps to ensure they're not overpaying for cover.

"There are several surprising factors that can drive up the cost of insurance, or worse, invalidate it. Simple changes like moving house, switching jobs, or altering mileage can have significant impacts if they're not kept up to date.

"We urge motorists to regularly review their policies, ensure their details are accurate, and explore smart ways to save. Even the time and day you choose to buy insurance can have an impact."
