Newcastle have reportedly entered the race to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Everton. Calvert-Lewin spent nine years at Everton, scoring 71 goals in 273 games, and decided to leave the club this summer after his contract expired.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, but Newcastle have now emerged as a potential destination. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a long-term admirer of Calvert-Lewin, with the Magpies having previously attempted to sign him last summer.

And a new report from talkSPORT claims that Newcastle have held talks with Calvert-Lewin about making the move to St James' Park this summer. The report also notes United's interest in the striker, while Leeds are said to have enquired but been unable to meet his wage demands.

Newcastle are in the market for a new goalscorer to provide competition and support for Alexander Isak, after it was confirmed that Callum Wilson has left the club following the expiration of his contract.

Wilson spent five years at Newcastle, scoring 47 goals in 113 games, and was in talks about an extension. However, an agreement was unable to be reached and Wilson announced his departure on Monday.

"To all you Magpies, it's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon," Wilson said. "Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

"I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate end really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end, but there's no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts."

Calvert-Lewin could be an ideal replacement for Wilson and the fact that Newcastle can offer him the opportunity to play in the Champions League could be a major selling point given United have failed to qualify for Europe.

Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injury problems in recent years and previously opened up about the impact they have had on his mental health. "The love and support helped carry me through," Calvert-Lewin said back in 2022.

"One thing I learned this season is that everyone in whatever walk of life is fighting battles you know nothing about, and there is no shame in finding someone to talk to and being open and honest with yourself about how you really feel.

"To all the young kings suppressing emotion I advise you to talk, to a friend, family member or someone that will listen, talking saved my life."
