Biswanath, July 8: On Tuesday, Ranoj Pegu, the Education Minister of Assam, visited Majuligarh in the Biswanath district to evaluate various educational infrastructure initiatives, including a newly established model residential school.
During his visit, he explored the potential of transforming the school into a model college aimed at serving the tea garden community.
“There are several existing schools and a college in the vicinity. We are considering the possibility of converting this newly built model school into a model college for the tea gardens; however, no final decision has been made yet,” Pegu stated after inspecting the premises.
He mentioned that he would compile a report with suggestions for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after consulting with local residents and the area MLA.
“I am here to determine whether the community requires a school, a college, or a polytechnic. Feedback from locals and the MLA will be crucial in finalizing the proposal,” he added.

While a decision regarding the institution's future is still pending, the Minister assured that efforts would be made to facilitate student admissions by 2026.
“We will ensure that students can enroll here by 2026, whether it continues as a school or transitions into a college,” he affirmed.
Pegu also pointed out that although the building was completed in 2021, it has yet to be officially transferred from the Public Works Department (PWD) to the Education Department.
A contractor on-site confirmed that the project, which cost Rs 29 crore, began in 2019 and was finished two years later, but the formal handover is still outstanding.
It is noteworthy that six model schools have been established in the tea garden region as part of a special initiative by the state government.
