A Singapore Airlines flight from Brisbane to Singapore was forced to divert to Perth for an emergency landing after experiencing a technical problem mid-flight.
Flight SQ246 took off from Brisbane Airport on the night of July 7, scheduled to arrive at Changi Airport at 5:45 a.m. the next day. However, flight tracking data showed the Airbus A350-900 veered south towards Perth after flying past Broome on Australia’s north-west coast.
The plane landed safely at Perth Airport at 4:58 a.m. with 272 passengers and 15 crew members on board, The Straits Times reported.
Singapore Airlines said the aircraft experienced a technical issue that required a spare part and additional repair time, The West Australian reported.
Passengers were provided with food and drinks while waiting for a replacement plane. The flight was renumbered SQ9224 and eventually departed Perth at 4:40 p.m. on July 8, with an expected arrival in Singapore at around 9:40 p.m.
“We are giving all necessary assistance to affected passengers, including rebooking connecting flights and arranging hotel accommodation in Singapore if needed,” an airline spokesperson said, adding that Singapore Airlines “sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused.”
