Overview of the Upcoming Tournament

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has unveiled the roster of participants for the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament, which has sparked some confusion within the global chess community. Scheduled to take place from September 3 to 16 in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, this tournament serves as a crucial qualifier for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the final step before the World Chess Championship.

Absence of Magnus Carlsen

A significant point of discussion has been resolved: World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen will not be participating. Despite ongoing speculation about a potential return to the classical World Championship cycle, the five-time World Champion has opted out of the 2025 Grand Swiss, continuing his trend of selective participation in classical events since stepping down as the reigning World Champion.

A Platform for Emerging Talents

While Carlsen's absence is a major talking point, it opens the door for emerging talents to shine on a prestigious platform.

Star-Studded Lineup in Samarkand

The tournament will feature 172 competitors divided into two sections: 116 in the Open category and 56 in the Women's category, all competing in an 11-round Swiss format. Notable participants include reigning World Champion D Gukesh, India's top player Arjun Erigaisi, and rising stars R Praggnanandhaa and Nihal Sarin.

Prominent international players such as Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Anish Giri, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Levon Aronian will also be competing, ensuring high-stakes matches from the outset.

Diverse Representation

The 2025 Grand Swiss will include 101 players invited based on their ratings in the Open section, alongside one representative from each continent, six FIDE wildcards, and five selections from the local organizing committee.
