A wake ended in a mass brawl with one man repeatedly punched, kicked and stamped on as mourners "behaved like overgrown children".

Conrad Vaughan, 42, set about his victim before he was then punched by Mark Layton, 45, whose mother’s funeral they were all attending, Nottingham Crown Court has been told.

The two men were dragged before the courts despite numerous more being involved in the violence which erupted as people gathered to celebrate the life of Layton's mother, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said: “Grown men appearing before the courts having had too much to drink having behaved like overgrown children.

"I appreciate that for both of you this was a difficult day and Mr Layton this was your mother’s funeral and you had been up since 6am drinking alcohol.

“You, Mr Vaughan, joined in later on and you'd had too much to drink. The evening was going perfectly smoothly and there were no difficulties until, sadly, for reasons that are not clear, somebody lit the blue touch paper and things got seriously out of control."

He went on: "Mr Layton you, initially, did not get involved and you, Mr Vaughan, acted as some kind of buffer to stop someone throwing a bottle. Others became involved, the temperature rose and there came a time where you, Mr Vaughan, snapped and that uncorked the bottle.

“You struck (the victim) with a number of blows repeatedly and you accept, having seen the footage, tried to stamp on him and kick him and for a few minutes you were quite clearly out of control.

"Mr Layton you then came on to the scene and no doubt due to the excess alcohol and the emotion you got involved as well.

“He (the victim) quite clearly had lost his temper and while I can't say he was the author of his own misfortune he had lost it until he was attacked by you.”

Gary Short, prosecuting, said the violence erupted at the Dog House pub, in Main Street, Kimberley, on August 4, 2023. He said groups had gathered at the wake and, after a woman threw a drink at the victim, punches were thrown and a number of people became involved.

The prosecutor said: “The first significant piece of violence saw the victim knocked to the ground and punched repeatedly.

“Mr Vaughan then punches him and others join in and when he falls to the floor he stamps on him and kicks him. The situation seems to calm down but then Mr Layton arrives and the violence erupts again.

“For the next five minutes a number of people take shots at the victim whenever they get the chance.”

Vaughan of Wollaton Vale and Layton of Sherwood, both pleaded guilty to affray and were given suspended prison sentences.
