If you're looking for a peaceful getaway in a truly unique location, look no further. This holiday cottage is situated on a private tidal island on the banks of the Menai Strait.

With four bathrooms and an outdoor hot tub, the spacious accommodation (that has enough room for 12 people) is set in an incredible location in the shadow of the historic Menai Suspension Bridge. This makes Ynys Faelog on Anglesey (Ynys Môn) the ideal place for a weekend - or longer - away with your whole family; there's just one catch.

As it's on a tidal island, you can only drive up to the house when the tide's out; the rest of the time you'll have to walk to and from the mainland via a pedestrian causeway to the town of Menai Bridge.

But it's proven popular with guests, with a 4.4 rating on sykescottages.co.uk; one reviewer called it "an absolutely fabulous destination".

They said: "The house has been updated to an incredibly high spec and the island setting is second to none [and] The Victoria Hotel close by did us proud for our Sunday lunch - would recommend."

Another review said: "All 10 of us had the best time; couldn't recommend it more. So peaceful; didn't want to leave."

And another said: "The views were amazing and the accommodation was perfect. Our family really enjoyed experiencing a tidal property and we were all endlessly fascinated at watching the Menai Strait."

Others, however, said trying to use the hot tub - one of the cottage's main draws - proved problematic. One review said: "Even after hours and hours of diligently following instructions we achieved merely tepid temperatures."

Another reviewer said: "The only issue was the difficulty in warming up the hot tub and we were unable to use it despite our efforts on two nights. Stunning location but difficult to access with a wheelchair when the tide was high."

Other reviewers said the manual setting out how to use the kitchen equipment, heating, and other facilities was an issue, as well as the lack of an extractor fan in the kitchen.

Alternative holiday cottages in the area include the two-bedroom Shell Cottage, rated 8.6 on booking.com. Nearby, Melin y Coed has four bedrooms, and is rated 9.5 on booking.com.
