New Delhi: England’s hopes in the third Test against India took a hit late on Day 1 at Lord’s as captain Ben Stokes picked up a suspected groin injury, which left the camp concerned heading into the second day.

The 34-year-old appeared to pull up while running between the wickets late in the final session on Day 1, prompting on-field treatment from the England physio. Despite the discomfort, the skipper chose to continue batting and was unbeaten on 39 at stumps, partnering with Joe Root, who was just one run shy of his 37th Test century.

The Lions ended the day at 251 for four with Root at 99 not out as they aim to build on the same heading into Day 2.

‘Fingers crossed’

The England management will be anxiously monitoring Stokes overnight, given his critical role in the side, especially with the series levelled at 1-1. Stoke’s career has often been hampered by injuries,s including knee surgery back in 2023 and two serious hamstring tears in the last year. However, the all-rounder has managed to return to bowling in recent matches, providing vital balance to the team.

Speaking after Day 1’s play, England vice-captain Ollie Pope expressed hope that Stokes’ injury is not serious. He said, “Fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious, and he can do something magic and come back strong.” Pope added, “We’ll see how he pulls up tomorrow. We’ve got a big Test ahead and two more coming, so it’s important to manage him well.”

Root holds the fort

While Stoke’s fitness remains a concern, Root’s innings was the highlight of the day for the Lions. The 34-year-old will resume on Day 2, looking to convert his start into a big score for his side.

Pope contributed 44 runs before falling to Ravindra Jadeja, but he believes Root will remain focused despite missing out on a century before stumps.
