Barclays has clarified the rules around an important cash limit that applies to all customers.

The issue came to light when a customer contacted the bank after they had a frustrating experience accessing cash services.

They told the bank over social media that they had to do a 32-mile round trip just to withdraw some cash at their nearest branch.

The customer fumed: "Your local hubs won't have the amount I need to withdraw so I am forced to travel 32 miles to withdraw my own money that you use to make even more money.

"I have to pay to travel to access my own funds. There is nothing you can do or say that will change that fact."

Barclays responded to apologise for their experience and assured that the bank still has a presence in "a lot of communities even if the branch has closed".

They also directed the person to the branch finder tool on their website so they could look for another branch in their area.

The customer went on to explain that they were trying to withdraw an amount above £5,000 and that they are based in Ramsgate in Kent.

In response, the bank explained an important rule, saying: "Cash withdrawals over £2,000 are subject to availability and the branch needs to be contacted ahead of time to arrange this."

There is no limit to how much you can withdraw over the counter at a branch as long as you have the fund available but if you want to take out more than £2,000, the advice is to let Barclays know ahead of time.

Advice on the Barclays website explains: "If you want to withdraw over £2,000, please give us 24 hours' notice so we can make sure the money's ready for you to collect.

"For smaller amounts, it might be easier to take the money out from our cash machines using your debit or cash card."

Barclays customers can also make a withdrawal at a cash machine, including any with the Visa or Plus log, using your debit card.

There are some limits that apply to how much you can take out in this way, including:

  • Personal current accounts (including Cash Card accounts) - up to £300 a day, but you can set a daily limit from £0 to £500
  • Premier - up to £1,000 a day, but you can set a daily limit from £0 to £2,000
  • Business - up to £750 a day
  • Cash card (youth) - up to £50 a day, but you can set a daily limit from £0 to £50.
