A 28-year-old American tourist died after his motorbike plunged into a drainage ditch while descending a hill on Son Tra Peninsula in Da Nang City on Friday morning.

At around 5 a.m. locals exercising on Hoang Sa Street near the base of Bai Bac Pass on the peninsula found him lying next to the vehicle.

The city’s fire-fighting and rescue police dispatched specialized vehicles and eight officers to the scene. Emergency services also arrived, but the man had died by that time.

They found his body near a road barrier while a Honda manual motorcycle was lying in the ditch.

The police found identification documents confirming his American nationality. They did not reveal his name.

He was temporarily staying at an apartment in An Hai Ward.

By around 10 a.m. the motorbike was retrieved, and the body was taken to a morgue to await the arrival of his family members.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but initial reports suggest the man caused the accident himself, leading to his death.

Hoang Sa Street leading to Son Tra Peninsula is a scenic route popular with tourists for its views of mountains on one side and the sea on the other.

However, it is a steep and winding road with sharp turns and limited visibility that can also become slippery when it rains. There are also deep ravines on one side that pose a risk.
