Italy has officially secured a spot in the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted in India. This marks a historic moment as it will be the first time the Italian national cricket team participates in an ICC global event.

With this, Italy has become the 15th team to qualify for next year’s tournament, which will feature a total of 20 teams.

Italy’s remarkable qualification journey reflects how cricket is steadily expanding across the globe. But do you know when cricket actually started in Italy, and how the team managed to qualify for their first-ever World Cup?

When Did Cricket Start in Italy?

The game of cricket officially began to take shape in Italy with the establishment of the Italian Cricket Federation in 1980.

Just four years later, in 1984, Italy gained ICC membership, which gave their cricketing journey an international structure. That same year, the team played its first official match, mostly facing local clubs based in London.

Italy’s first international cricket match came in 1989 against Denmark, which ended in a draw. Their growth continued steadily, and in 1995, Italy was granted associate membership by the ICC—11 years after their debut in official competition.

The qualification process for the T20 World Cup 2026 involved a multi-tiered system. The top 8 teams from the previous edition earned automatic qualification, while four more teams secured their spots based on ICC rankings.

The remaining eight teams had to go through regional qualifiers to make it to the main event—Italy being one of them.

In the Europe Regional Qualifiers, a total of 30 teams competed, split into groups of five. Italy topped Group A to progress to the final qualifying stage, where only two out of five teams could make it to the World Cup.

Even though Italy lost to the Netherlands in this final stage, they managed to finish ahead of Jersey on the basis of net run rate, earning them a historic ticket to the T20 World Cup 2026.
