Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) has made a big announcement and has ended the additional age relaxation of 5 years given to the economically weaker section (EWS). After the recent decision of the High Court, the commission has issued an order in this regard. According to the order, now the maximum age limit will be applicable to the candidates of the EWS category as per the unreserved category. That is, EWS candidates above 40 years of age as on January 1, 2025, will be considered ineligible for the upcoming examinations.

MPPSC has clarified that this order will also apply to all the previous recruitment examinations of the commission.

This will have a direct impact on those EWS candidates who were previously applying by taking advantage of the 5-year age relaxation. It is noteworthy that till now, the candidates of the EWS category were given additional age relaxation of 5 years, like Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

What was the old rule?

In February 2022, Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) started giving 5 5-year relaxation in the age limit to EWS category candidates like SC/ST and OBC category. Since then, candidates from economically weaker sections have benefited from this in many examinations of the commission.

What was the High Court's direction?

This rule was challenged in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. it was said that age relaxation is only for reserved category candidates. Whereas the EWS category has been given the provision of only 10% reservation in the Constitution. No facilities like age relaxation. The court held that EWS is not considered a socially backward class. Therefore, giving them age relaxation is against the rules.
