The Karnataka government has announced a new rule to make movie tickets cheaper. From now on, ticket prices for regional language films—including Kannada movies—cannot go over ₹200, even in multiplexes. This rule was promised earlier this year by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and is now officially in place.

Karnataka Government Orders Fixing The Movie Tickets Price

The move has garnered support from major industry bodies including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association, both of which view the cap as a way to boost audience turnout for Kannada-language films.

The ticket price cap fulfills an earlier commitment made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his budget address on March 7. In that speech, he had outlined plans to make movie-watching more affordable by limiting ticket rates at ₹200, even in high-end multiplexes, specifically for regional language content.

Resistance from Multiplexes Not New

Although welcomed by regional film stakeholders, this is not the first time such a policy has been introduced. A similar price cap was proposed by Siddaramaiah back in 2017 during his earlier tenure as Chief Minister. That attempt faced stiff resistance from multiplex operators, who argued it would lead to significant revenue losses. Legal pushback followed, with some operators even approaching the Karnataka High Court, leading to the eventual rollback of the cap.

This latest enforcement seeks not only to promote regional cinema but also to bring consistency to ticket pricing across Karnataka. The decision follows increasing public dissatisfaction with multiplex chains charging excessively for new releases.
