A visit to the United States took an unexpected turn for one Indian woman after she became the subject of a growing controversy surrounding an alleged theft at a Target store in Illinois. According to authorities, the woman — who was reportedly in the country temporarily — spent more than seven hours inside the store before staff alerted local police to her suspicious behavior.

The incident began when Target employees noticed the woman pacing the aisles, repeatedly checking her phone, and gradually filling a shopping cart with various items. Eventually, they claim, she attempted to exit through the store’s west gate without paying for roughly $1,300 worth of merchandise.

Bodycam Footage Released

Bodycam footage released by police and now circulating across social media platforms shows a Target employee recounting the situation. “We saw this woman roaming around the store for the last seven hours,” the staffer says. “She was picking up items, checking her phone, moving between aisles, and eventually tried to walk out without paying.”

In the video, the woman appears cooperative and offers to pay for the items, seemingly unaware of the severity of the situation. “I am really sorry to bother you if it is,” she tells police. “I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here.” However, the responding officer responds sharply: “Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so.”

Despite her explanation, police reviewed the bill and proceeded to handcuff her. While she was not formally arrested at the scene, she was taken to the station for further processing. Authorities confirmed that felony charges are being prepared, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.

Online Backlash:

The viral video has triggered a wave of criticism from the Indian online community. Many users voiced anger and disappointment, saying such incidents tarnish India’s global image and fuel negative stereotypes.

“Being an immigrant, I can’t fathom the audacity of being a guest to this country and breaking its laws 😭,” one user wrote, echoing a sentiment shared widely in comment threads.

Another remarked, “She went abroad with the country’s passport only to bring disgrace. Now, U.S. social media is filled with hate and contempt for Indians because of one person’s mistake.”

“Embarrassing India on a global stage,” said a third commenter.

The video has not only stirred emotions but also prompted reflection among viewers about personal responsibility and how individual actions can affect the reputation of an entire community abroad.
