New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a tennis player was shot dead by her father in their Gurugram home on Thursday.
Deepak Yadav used his licensed revolver to fire five bullets at his daughter Radhika, of which three hit her.
Deepak, who confessed to killing his daughter, was arrested from the crime scene, at Sushant Lok Phase 2, Sector 57.
Radhika Yadav, a 25-year-old state-level tennis player, won several competitions and was well known in Haryana’s sporting fraternity.
Born on March 23, 2000, made a name for herself in age-group tennis. As per records by All India Tennis Assocation (AITA) records, she had a career-best ranking of 75 in girls’ U-18, 35 in women’s singles and 53 in women’s doubles.
Police said they received a call that a woman with bullet injuries was brought dead to the hospital.
A complaint was filed by the accused’s brother based on which an FIR was lodged against Deepak.
The motive of the heinous crime appears to be personal differences between father and daughter.
“We have taken the accused into custody and are conducting a thorough investigation. The motive appears to be to personal differences over the victim’s social media activity, but all angles are being explored,” said a police official.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Deepak was distressed over Radhika’s frequent use of social media, particularly her habit of making Instagram reels. Family sources said there were frequent disagreements and tensions between the two regarding Radhika’s online presence and career choices.
Deepak was also said to be was upset with his daughter for running a tennis academy.
Police have seized the weapon used in the crime.
Family members and neighbours are being spoken to as part of the probe. Police are also examining CCTV footage from the area and have appealed to anyone with further information to come forward.
The authorities have assured the public of a transparent and swift investigation.
