During the third Test being played against England at Lord’s, a stressful moment caught everyone’s attention, when Indian captain Shubman Gill could not control his feelings. On the third day of this match, India finished its first innings for 387 runs, which was equal to England’s score. After this, there were only two overs left before the stumps and English openers Jack Croly and Ben Docket deliberately were seen wasting time.
Crowley was shown on the pretext of playing slowly between the balls and calling the physio on the field, which upset Jaspreet Bumrah and other Indian players. During this whole incident, Gill was seen saying some sharp words on the stump mike towards Croly and making an indecent gesture. This was completely different from his calm nature and such behavior is not expected from a captain.
Gill is usually considered restrained and never had a case of violation of the code of conduct against him. This is the reason that till now no official warning has been given to them by the ICC. However, it is possible that further action should be taken.
Even though Gill’s response can be understood, because Crrolly’s attitude was provoking, a captain is expected to maintain his patience on the field. The umpires should also have been more vigilant at that time and the Crowley should have given strict warnings. But the inactivity of the umpire does not allow the captain to break the discipline.
There have been many occasions in cricket history when the players have taken wrong steps in emotions. Examples of aggressive captains like Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly are in front of us. At the same time, captains like Dhoni and Dravid always took decisions with a cold mind. Gill will have to balance between these two styles.
This is Gill’s third Test as captain and it is too early to assume that he has gone on a new path of aggression. It may be a temporary lapse, which is left as a chance to learn. However, they will be expected more maturity in the future.
