If a member of your family has died and their Aadhaar number is still active, then this news is very important for you. UIDAI, the agency that issues Aadhaar, is now closing those Aadhaar numbers that belong to deceased persons, so that their identity cannot be misused in any way.

Aadhaar number is a 12-digit special identity that is given to every Indian citizen. But after the death of a person, it becomes necessary to close their Aadhaar number so that no one can misuse it. This work has now been made easier than before.

It is necessary to close their Aadhaar after the death of a family member
UIDAI has started a new service on 9 June 2025 on the 'My Aadhaar' portal, called "Information of the death of a family member". Through this facility, any person can apply to close their Aadhaar by giving information about the deceased member of their family.

How to apply, and which documents will be required?

If you want to give information about the death of a member of your family to UIDAI, then you have to apply by visiting the 'My Aadhaar' portal. For this, you should have the Aadhaar number of the deceased person, information of the death certificate, and documents related to your identity.

This facility has been started in 24 states and union territories of the country, and preparations are underway to start it in the remaining states soon.

How many Aadhaar numbers have been closed so far?

UIDAI had requested the Registrar General of India to share the death records related to Aadhaar. Under this, about 1.55 crore death records were found, out of which 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been closed after necessary investigation.

Apart from this, UIDAI is also working in the states where the Civil Registration System (CRS) is not used. So far, about 6.7 lakh records have been found from there, and the process of closing is going on.

Aadhaar numbers of people above 100 years of age are also being checked
UIDAI also wants to ensure that people who are more than 100 years old are alive or not. For this, the data of such Aadhaar holders is being sent to the state governments, and until it is confirmed, their Aadhaar number will not be closed.

UIDAI appeals, do not forget to close Aadhaar after the death of a family member
UIDAI clearly says that if a family member dies and a death certificate is received, then go to the 'My Aadhaar' portal as soon as possible and give the information. This will not only keep the record updated, but will also prevent misuse of that Aadhaar number.

Why is it important?

In today's digital era, the Aadhaar card is linked to many important services like bank accounts, subsidies, government schemes, pension etc. In such a situation, if the Aadhaar of the deceased person remains active, then it can be misused, which can be harmful for both the family and the system.
