New Delhi: Swimmer Srihari Nataraj’s impressive run in the pool continued on Sunday as he set new ‘Best Indian Time’ in the men’s 100m freestyle. He clocked in 49.46 seconds to qualify for the semifinals at the World University Games in Berlin.

The 24-year-old erased Guangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist Virdhawal Khade’s long-standing record of 49.47 seconds, which Khade registered back in 2008 at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune.

Nataraj achieved the feat while competing in heat number six, finishing first in the race as hr secured overall 12th position heading into the semis.

This performance follows his strong outing on Friday, where he twice improved his own ‘Best Indian Time’ in the 200m freestyle during the competition,n which reflects his consistency and confidence with which he has been approaching his races this season.

Difference between National Record and Best Indian Time

In Indian swimming, a technical distinction exists between National Record and Best Indian Time. National Records are recognised only if they are achieved during the National Aquatics Championships while faster timings in other competitions, such as international meets, are logged as ‘Best Indian Time’. Despite this, these timings demonstrate the athlete’s form and their ability to compete against some of the world’s best swimmers under pressure.

Eyes on bigger goals

Nataraj is one of India’s brightest swimmers, having already represented the country at the Tokyo Olympics and the Asian Games. He has consistently shown that he can deliver in high-stakes meets. One such example is breaking Khade’s longstanding record, sending another reminder of his potential and determination to push Indian swimming to new heights.

As he gears up for the semifinals, Nataraj will look to carry forward his momentum aiming for a place in the finals. His performance in Chengdu so far reflects a swimmer in peak form who is hungry to constantly improve.
