On Sunday (July 20) in Chandigarh’s largest furniture market, the administration took major action and demolished more than 100 shops. The administration took this action on the basis of the Supreme Court on the basis of the Supreme Court on the basis of the Supreme Court’s ‘Indore Development Authority vs. Manoharlal’, which states that illegal businessmen on government land would be considered encroachers and they will not be given priority in any kind of land allocation.

During the action, a heavy police force was deployed in the area, so that any protest or chaos could be dealt with. To keep the traffic controlled, the surrounding roads were temporarily discontinued and traffic diverted. In this action, about 116 shops in the furniture market were grounded with bulldozers.

According to the administration, about 15 acres of land was illegally occupied by the shopkeepers. The land was acquired in the year 2002 itself and was part of the total land of 227.22 acres for the development of Sector-53, 54 and 55, including the lands of Kajhedi, Badhedi and Palsaura villages. Compensation and increased compensation has already been provided to the owners of the concerned land.

The affected shopkeepers say that they have been doing furniture business at this place since 1986 and they have made their livelihood here with hard work. The shopkeepers alleged that the administration called him encroachers, while they are working businessmen. They also say that if they had to be removed, then an alternative place should have been provided. He had demanded priority in land allocation, but the demand was rejected by Estate Officer-Kam-DC on 9 January 2025.

Prior to this action, the administration issued notice to all the shopkeepers on 22 June 2024 and directed to remove the shops within a week. When the shopkeepers did not vacate the shops within the stipulated time, the administration took this strict step on Sunday.
