At least three airlines have canceled multiple flights scheduled on Monday and Tuesday because of storm Wipha, which is barreling toward Vietnam’s northern coast.

Vietnam Airlines said it would cancel flights VN1188, VN7188, VN7189, VN7056 and VN7057 from HCMC to Hai Phong, and VN1856 and VN1857 from the city to Con Dao Island today.

Pacific Airlines has canceled flights BL6520 and BL6521 from HCMC to Hai Phong today and moved up departure times for flights BL6440 and BL6441 on the same route to ensure they take off and land at Cat Bi airport (Hai Phong) before noon.

On Tuesday all flights operated by Vietnam Airlines Group, consisting of Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and regional airline VASCO, from Hai Phong will depart in the afternoon.

Many of its other domestic and international flights on Monday and Tuesday will also suffer disruptions.

Budget carrier Vietjet Air also canceled eight flights from HCMC to Quang Ninh and Hai Phong on Monday.

Airlines have warned that schedules are susceptible to further changes as the storm evolves, and passengers should check directly with them for updates.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has ordered all units to deploy safety measures ensuring fool-proof protection for operations and passengers and remain on standby 24/7 for emergency response.

The Vietnam Airports Corporation and Van Don Airport have been instructed to carry out comprehensive inspections of infrastructure and communications systems so that any possible damage is identified and repaired promptly, and safeguard all facilities and control towers.

At 7:00 a.m. on Monday, Wipha lay centered around 220 km east of the Quang Ninh–Hai Phong area, with maximum sustained winds measured at 88 kph and gusts of up to 103-117 kph, and was moving west‑southwest at 15–20 kph.

The forecast is that by 7:00 p.m. on Monday the storm will reach the northern part of the Gulf of Tonkin with winds of 89-117 kph after moving west‑southwest at 20–25 kph.

By 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday it should weaken to 88-102 kph over the Hai Phong–Thanh Hoa coast, move inland and weaken into a tropical depression over Laos.
