Mohit Suri’s latest romantic offering, 'Saiyaara', has made its theatrical debut and is already generating a fair bit of buzz, not just for its tender storytelling and soulful music, but also for an unexpected reason. While fans are applauding the performances of newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, several cinephiles online are raising eyebrows over the film’s storyline, claiming it bears a strong resemblance to the 2004 South Korean tearjerker 'A Moment to Remember'.

'Saiyaara' Plot

At the heart of 'Saiyaara' lies the tale of Krish Kapur, a temperamental musician, and Vaani, a soft-spoken aspiring journalist. Their love story takes a heartbreaking turn when Vaani is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. What follows is an emotional exploration of memory, love, and loss, themes that seem to mirror those in the acclaimed Korean film directed by John H. Lee.

The comparisons were first sparked by Reddit users, who pointed out several overlapping plot elements between the two films. One post remarked, “Major plot points are the same, like Alzheimer’s, confusion with ex, girl running away. Also, the ending where he recreates the past moment is the same…”

A user also agreed, "Yes totally copy of A Moment to Remember".

A user asked, "Except the concept of Alzheimer's which is a very common trope in dozens of movie, what exactly is the same here!! The biggest thing that makes the movie different is the music! Where's that music in this Korean film?"

Mohit Suri's History of Korean Inspirations

Suri, known for hits like 'Murder 2' (inspired by 'The Chaser') and 'Ek Villain' (drawing from 'I Saw the Devil'), has faced similar accusations before. His 2007 film 'Awarapan' was also noted for its similarities with 'A Bittersweet Life'. Given this pattern, fans were quick to speculate whether 'Saiyaara' might be yet another unofficial remake.

Interestingly, the screenplay of 'Saiyaara' is credited to Sankalp Sadanah, with dialogues penned by Rohan Shankar. Neither the writers nor the director has responded publicly to the speculation. As of now, Yash Raj Films, the banner backing the project, has also remained tight-lipped about the alleged inspiration.

Viewers and critics alike have praised the chemistry between the lead pair, along with its stirring soundtrack composed by an ensemble that includes Mithoon, Sachet–Parampara, Vishal Mishra, and more. For many, 'Saiyaara' hits the emotional beats just right, even if the beats might feel familiar to fans of K-dramas.
