Due to damp and overcast conditions, Day One is expected to provide assistance to fast bowlers. As noted by Mike Atherton, the traditionally dry surface at Old Trafford might supported spin, especially Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist spin. However, the humidity might lead team management, including Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill, to consider recalling Shardul Thakur as a pace-bowling all-rounder in place of the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy.
