Now you can convert your existing set-top box into a full-fledged PC, yes you read right! As Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has launched a new cloud-based virtual desktop service that helps in converting your existing set-top box into a full-fledged PC.

Jio Launching JioPC

They have named it as JioPC and this service is said to work with any compatible TV connected to a Jio set-top box and is currently available for free to users through a waitlist.

The telecom and streaming services platform claims that the new service is aimed at making computing more accessible and affordable in areas where PC penetration is low.

JioPC is known to be using Ubuntu (Linux) as its operating system.

To utilise this, the users will have to connect to their set-top box with a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse to use JioPC.

As the telecom claims, this comes pre-installed with LibreOffice, an open-sourced free-to-use office suite that includes apps for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and more.

Besides this, the users can also access Microsoft Office via the built-in web browser.

So far, JioPC does not support external peripherals like a camera and printer.

But, according to Jio, it will change in the ‘near future.’

With the help of JioPC, the users could make use of basic features such as web browsing, word processing and even offer e-learning sessions.

Besides this the users will also be able to install and run a bunch of apps.

If we compare this with PCs and laptops, JioPC is emerging as a much more affordable solution for students and users who want access to a PC without investing a lot of money.

In addition to this, it eliminates the maintenance and upgrade costs since all the information is stored and processed on the cloud.

How Does It Work?

In order to make use of the JioPC, an individual will need to have an active Jio set-top box subscription considering the fact that JioPC is not bundled with the Jio subscription.

Please note that the JioPC is not available for a one time purchase, it is only available as a subscription, you can check the tariffs on the JioPC website.

Considering that it is a cloud-based service, the user will need to have an active internet connection at all times.

Steps to Use JioPC

1. First of all, you will have to power on your Jio set-top box and head over to the apps section.

2. Then you need to find and install a Jio PC and connect a USB or Bluetooth-enabled mouse and keyboard to the set-top box. For reference, Jio has mentioned a bunch of compatible devices on its website that you can connect to the set-top box.

3. Once the page appears, enter your details and sign up for a JioPC account. After that tap on the ‘Continue’ button to proceed.

4. Lastly, click on the ‘Launch now’ to start using JioPC.
