Dehradun: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at a few places in Almora, Chamoli, and Udham Singh Nagar districts, and at many locations across the rest of Uttarakhand.

The monsoon surge continues to grip the state, with Dehradun recording over 70 mm of rain on Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and rising river levels.

After a sweltering morning where temperatures crossed 34°C, Dehradun saw a sudden burst of heavy rainfall in the afternoon, offering brief relief from the heat but triggering flooding across city roads. The Bindal and Rispana rivers swelled rapidly, threatening residential areas and damaging roads and buildings situated along their banks. A culvert collapse near IT Park on Sahastradhara Road briefly halted traffic, while major junctions like Hathibarkala and Raipur struggled with waterlogging.

“Widespread rain activity is expected to persist for the next few days,” an IMD official said, warning of potential flash floods and landslides in vulnerable zones.

Despite the showers, Nainital witnessed weekend tourist activity, with visitors enjoying misty drizzles and scenic views between heavier spells. Meanwhile, civic authorities in Dehradun have mobilized emergency response units and drainage crews to manage the growing threat of inundation.

Heavy rain is also likely in districts like Bageshwar and Tehri, while hill regions remain at risk of further erosion and damage due to saturated slopes. The IMD’s alert places focus on preparedness across urban and remote pockets alike, as the monsoon intensifies its hold over the region.

After a sunny start that pushed Dehradun’s temperature above 34°C, the afternoon brought sudden cloud cover and a heavy downpour that lasted nearly an hour. Though the rain offered brief relief from the heat, post-showers humidity and waterlogging created major discomfort across the city. Overflowing rivers—including Rispana and Bindal—have raised alarm, damaging roads and threatening residential areas along their banks.

Disaster management teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas, and civic authorities are working to clear clogged drainage lines. With the monsoon gaining strength, Uttarakhand’s fragile hill infrastructure remains under pressure.
