Lorraine fans struggled to keep watching as Christine Lampard took part in a gross Emmerdale tradition live on air. During Friday's visit (July 25) to the ITV studios, the former One Show presenter welcomed viewers back to the programme as she stands in for Scottish host Lorraine Kelly. The Irish broadcaster discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines including the upcoming European Women's Championship against Spain and the ongoing doctor's strike.

Later on in the show, she welcomed actor Lisa Riley onto the program to celebrate her major milestone on the small screen after completing 30 years on Emmerdale. After discussing the highs and lows of her time in the Yorkshire Dales, she decided to get Christine into character on the show.

To become an official Dingle in the ITV show, Lisa, 49, gave the host a brand-new wardrobe, which included her character's staple leopard print pinny, and displayed her signature walk on the show.

She even went on to help her deliver some of Mandy Dingle's famous catchphrases such as: "You never mess with a Dingle" but things took a wild turn moments later.

After taking part in the jovial activities with her co-star Andi Peters, the competition host rushed offscreen and came back with a wellington boot in hand as Christine looked on in horror.

It was at this point that Lisa revealed an unusual tradition ITV bosses hold on the show when a new Dingle moves to the village, which is that they must drink out of the set's old welly.

As she was handed the footwear, she asked Andi: "Oh my God, have you been wearing that?" to which he chuckled: "Yeah, it'll smell nice!"

Lisa reassured her: "We really do this, Christine. We really, really do this" as she pleaded: "There's no sort of jokey effect?" as the actor insisted: "Nope, you have to do this."

Despite her initial disgust, Christine plugged her nose and took a sip out of the welly as the crew in the studio cheered: "Drink it! Drink it!" and then applausing her for her efforts.

Christine then attempted to show the camera the contents of the welly, insisting: "There's real stuff in that. I'm not joking. I did really do it." Lisa struggled to keep her composure as she chuckled: "I love the fact that you just sipped from the welly".

However the response from viewers at home was less than impressed, as they flooded to X - formerly known as Twitter - to share their disgust online. One user penned: "My God what is this total rubbush" Lisa Riley [eyes rolling emoji] #Lorraine" as another agreed: "Oh this is too cringy [two cringing emojis] #lorraine."

A third echoed: "Cringe #lorraine" as a fourth pointed out: "30 years of Mandy Dingle. Except for the 20 years when she wasn't in it #lorraine". However, some viewers enjoyed the cheeky interview with the northern star, with one user writing: "Congratulations! I'm just watching you on Lorraine @Reallisariley @emmerdale."

Lorraine airs on weekdays from 9am on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
