Did You Know You Should Drink Water Before Tea or Coffee? Here’s Why!
It's estimated that around 70% of the global adult population consumes beverages like tea and coffee daily. Chances are, you're one of them too, right?
For many of us, sipping on a cup of tea or coffee has become a morning ritual. These beverages offer an instant energy boost and a sense of freshness, which is why they’re often enjoyed before or after breakfast. Some even reach for a cup in the evening—especially during a slump at work or when feeling sluggish.
We've all come across conflicting opinions about tea and coffee. While some experts warn about their potential health risks, others praise their benefits.
For instance, coffee may cause acidity, but it's also known to enhance memory. Similarly, tea is said to help prevent certain cancers, yet it might also trigger dizziness or heartburn.

So, while moderate consumption of these beverages may offer some health benefits, overindulgence could be harmful.
Now think back—when was the last time you had a cup of coffee or tea? Did you drink water beforehand? Most of us likely didn’t, simply because it’s not a common habit.
However, new research suggests that drinking water before consuming tea or coffee can be beneficial. Here’s why:

What’s Inside Your Cup?
Both tea and coffee come from natural sources—tea leaves and coffee beans. They contain caffeine, a stimulant that helps improve alertness and energy levels. Coffee typically has more caffeine than tea.
While caffeine can give you a quick energy boost, excessive intake can lead to negative effects like anxiety and heart problems.
Experts recommend drinking a glass of water before tea or coffee to help dilute the concentration of caffeine, which may reduce its potential side effects.
Additionally, both drinks are mildly acidic—coffee has a pH of around 5 and tea around 6. Consuming acidic beverages can lead to acid reflux, stomach irritation, ulcers, and even long-term issues like colon damage.
Drinking water before your tea or coffee helps reduce the acidity in your stomach, lowering the risk of such problems and protecting your digestive system.
