The festivalthat you’ve been waiting for all year is finally days away. You're about to see your favourite artists, and your outfits are prepared for each day. But if there’s one thing people don't usually look forward to, it’s the long hours of standing and the scorching heat.

Summer means holidays, festivals and concerts - and staying hydrated is the number one method to survive a long day standing and walking around. One thing that I’ve recently discovered is the importance of electrolytes, and they’ve become a lifesaver. Touted as a method of hydration during sports days, or even as a big helper for a good night's sleep - electrolytes have become a best friend to all party-goers.

Indeed, it does keep you hydrated through the craze, but it also prevents you from giving up on seeing your favourite artist after spending hundreds of pounds for a ticket.

For a boost of energy, most people rely on energy drinks or coffee, which have high levels of caffeine. However, in the hot summer weather, these beverages leave us dehydrated and in need to consume more.

The magic of electrolytes

During my recent trip to Wireless Festival, on both Friday and Saturday nights, I mixed my bottle of water with Liquid I.V.’s latest electrolyte mix. After hearing people raving about its magic, I just had to give it a go.

Electrolytes are minerals that providebasic body functions. They play a crucial role in muscle function and in maintaining hydration, which is what they’re most known for. The main electrolytes are potassium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, calcium, phosphate and bicarbonates.

Adrian O’Brien, heath and wellbeing general manager Europe at Unilever, told the Mirror: “Festivals are all about having fun, being active and enjoying every moment, but long days in the sun, dancing and travelling can quickly leave you feeling drained.”

During the hours I stood and walked around the festival in the temperatures reaching 30 degrees, I didn’t notice any signs of fatigue. It was completely the opposite. I couldn’t stay still. I had the best time ever, and I couldn’t believe that a sachet of flavoured electrolytes mixed with a bottle of water could have such an impact.

“It’s ideal before heading out for the day, during long hours on your feet, or after a big night when you need a boost. Whether you’re dancing in a field, heading to a workout, or just trying to rehydrate after a sunny day out, it helps you bounce back and feel your best,” Alexa Abdelaziz, PHD, nutrition science manager, added.

To get the most out of your electrolytes at a festival, it’s best to sip them regularly throughout the day - especially if you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the sun. It’s also best to pair it with a 500ml bottle of water, ditching any other sugary drinks.

To test this further, I’ve been taking it on days where I knew I needed to be energised. For example, my recent visit to Billie Eilish’s concert at the O2 Arena in London. While partying in a sun-drenched field isn’t the same as running a marathon or a two-hour intense workout, the importance of keeping ourselves hydrated still applies.

However, it’s also important to note that although electrolytes are great and have many benefits, moderation is key. Always stick to the recommended serving sizes. According to Liquid I.V.'s product description, it's one stick per day.

By staying hydrated with electrolytes, I was able to have the best time ever without feeling tired out. And let me tell you, I wish I knew about it sooner. So next time you head out to a summer event, or any event, don't forget to bring your sunglasses and electrolytes.
