IGNOU’s new Vice Chancellor Uma Kanjilal’s studies

Uma’s appointment is also special because a woman has been made Vice Chancellor after about 40 years after the establishment of the university. Professor Uma studied her masters from Christ Church College in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh. He completed the post graduation in arts from here. He then earned a PhD from Jeevaji University in Madhya Pradesh.

Where did you start?

Professor Kanjilal started his career in 1984 as a research assistant at IIT Kanpur. He then served as Catalogger and Professional Assistant at Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts (IGNCA). It is from here that his journey in the field of education progressed. Professor Kanjilal started his journey as a lecturer in IGNOU. Gradually, he took over to the post of Professor, taking over several responsibilities. At IGNOU, he played important roles like University Librarian, Director of School of Social Sciences, and Head of Center for Online Education.

Important role played in digital education

His experience in the field of digital education has been very special. They have long been working in the fields of e-learning, digital library, multimedia course design and ICT. Since 2003, he has been a professor of Library and Information Science. He is currently the national coordinator of National Digital Education Schemes like SWAYAM and SWAYAM Prabha.

Uma Kanjilal experiences more than three decades

Professor Uma Kanjilal has been working in the field of education for more than three decades. During this time he has played many leadership roles. She has been the head of Center for Online Education, Advanced Center for Informatics and Innovative Learning, and Inter-University Consortium.

His contribution has also been seen internationally. He has received Fulbright Fellowship from the University of Illinois in the United States. She has done consultancy for the Commonwealth of Learning and has also been involved in the UNRWA’s Digital Education Project in Jordan. He has received several awards such as the Manthan Award, Australia-India Council Grant and Danida Fellowship.
