Starlink's path in India is not easy. Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar has recently informed that Elon Musk's satellite internet company Starlink will be allowed only 20 lakh connections in India. Starlink has not even set foot in India yet, and it seems that the government has already started cutting the 'wings' of Starlink. After the review meeting with BSNL, the Minister of State for Telecommunications said that Starlink could pose a threat to the government company BSNL and other telecom operators.

According to the Press Trust of India report, the minister said that Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India, and the company can offer speeds up to 200Mbps, which will not affect the telecom service. Starlink and other satellite communication (satcom) services will be available mainly in rural and remote areas, areas where BSNL already has a strong presence.

According to the minister, the cost of setting up and using the satcom service will be quite high. He said that the monthly fee could be around Rs 3000, making it an expensive option for many people. Talking about the growth of BSNL, he said that the rollout of BSNL's 4G services is now complete, and he also clarified that the company is not planning to increase its tariffs at the moment.

Starlink will be the third satellite company.

Earlier this month, Starlink got the final license to start commercial operations from India's space regulator IN-SPACe. This has removed the last hurdle for Starlink to enter the Indian market. The company has been waiting for final approval since 2022.
