India Post Merges Registered Post with Speed Post from September 1: Here’s What It Means for You

In a significant move aimed at simplifying postal services and enhancing customer convenience, the Department of Posts has announced that from September 1, 2025, Registered Post services will be merged into Speed Post. This merger will apply across all domestic mail services in India.

As a result, any domestic Registered Post sent after this date will automatically be handled as Speed Post. This change aims to streamline services, offer better tracking, and integrate key features of both postal services under a single umbrella.

Why Has This Decision Been Taken?

According to the Department of Posts, the merger is part of a broader initiative to simplify postal operations and improve customer experience. Both Registered Post and Speed Post offer delivery confirmation features, but their focus differs—Speed Post emphasizes faster delivery, while Registered Post is known for secure and documented delivery.

By combining both, the government seeks to offer the best of both services in one: speed, security, real-time tracking, and optional proof of delivery (POD).

What Will Change After September 1, 2025?

  • Registered Post labels will no longer be issued.

  • All domestic mails previously sent via Registered Post will now be processed as Speed Post.

  • Services like proof of delivery and recipient signatures, previously exclusive to Registered Post, will now be offered as value-added features within Speed Post.

  • Customers can still request POD for an additional fee of ₹10 per article.

What Should Regular Registered Post Users Do?

If you’ve been using Registered Post for official communications or legal documentation, it's crucial to inquire at your local post office about which features you’ll now need to opt in separately—especially if written proof of delivery is essential to you.

Make sure to ask for services like POD or recipient signature confirmation, as these are no longer automatically included.

Conclusion

The merger of Registered Post into Speed Post is a forward-looking move by the Indian postal department, aiming to deliver faster, more secure, and digitally trackable services under one brand. Customers, especially those who rely on reliable delivery with official documentation, should stay informed and adapt to the updated system from September 1, 2025.
