Mumbai: The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a cherished celebration of the deep bond between brothers and sisters. Observed each year on the full moon day of the Shravan (Sawan) month, this auspicious occasion sees sisters tying a sacred thread—rakhi—on their brothers’ wrists, symbolising love, protection, and lifelong support.

While the gesture of tying a rakhi is steeped in emotion and cultural tradition, many people remain uncertain about one aspect: when should the rakhi be removed? Some take it off the next day, while others wear it for weeks or even the entire year. Let’s understand what religious customs and beliefs suggest.

1. When Is It Auspicious to Remove the Rakhi?
There is no strict rule mentioned in scriptures about the exact day to untie the rakhi. However, tradition allows the rakhi to be removed once the Raksha Bandhan tithi (auspicious timing) ends. It is considered auspicious to remove it on the same day after the ritual period concludes.

2. Can Rakhi Be Removed on Janmashtami?
Yes, another suitable day to remove the rakhi is Janmashtami, which generally occurs 6–7 days after Raksha Bandhan. On this day, it is believed to be spiritually beneficial to untie the rakhi and tie it to a plant. This symbolic act is said to release the blessings into nature.

3. Is It Inauspicious to Keep the Rakhi for Too Long?
While there’s no religious prohibition, keeping the rakhi for too long—especially after it becomes damaged or frayed—can be considered inauspicious. Over time, rakhis may break, and once they are damaged, they are viewed as khandit (impure or incomplete), which may attract negativity.

4. Why Should You Remove a Broken Rakhi?
According to belief, broken or impure objects carry negative energy. That’s why it’s recommended not to keep a damaged rakhi tied indefinitely. Ideally, one should remove the rakhi by Janmashtami to maintain spiritual harmony and positivity.
