Recently, a message on WhatsApp and social media has created panic. This message has spread fear and confusion among the people. It is claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ordered banks to remove 500 rupee notes from ATMs by September 2025. Not only this, it was also said in the message that people should spend or change the 500 rupee notes with them quickly, otherwise these notes will become useless. But is it true? Come, let’s know the truth of this rumor.
The official fact-check unit of the Government of India, PIB Fact Check, has termed this viral message as completely fake. PIB made it clear on social media that RBI has not ordered any order to shut down a 500 rupee note or remove from ATM. These notes are completely valid and will remain in trend.
PIB has appealed to the people not to trust such rumors. Also, before sharing any information, check its veracity, especially when it is to money or government policies.
Experts say that this rumor started with an old circular of RBI. In this circular, it was suggested to increase the availability of small notes like 100 and 200 rupees to banks and white label ATM operators by April 2025. Its aim was that customers could get small notes easily from ATMs. But some people introduced this circular incorrectly and rumors spread that the 500 rupee note was being closed. Whereas in reality there is nothing like this.
So far there is no indication that the RBI is planning to shut down a 500 rupee note. Even if a big decision is taken in future, the government will make an official announcement as it was during the 2016 demonetisation. Till then the 500 rupee note is completely safe and valid. You can use it without any concern.
