A smallUKvillage has been rocked by an earthquake as locals recalled the moment they heard a "loud boom".

Locals living in Inchlaggan, ScottishHighlands, said their entire homes were "shaking" when the quake struck on Friday. The magnitude was listed at 3.1 on the Richter scale.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) shared a map which revealed the extent of the earthquake. The site recorded a depth of 8km and confirmed it had an impact zone of around 24km. Residents shared the nightmare on social media, with one person comparing the noise to a "quarry blasting". Others thought they heard a steam train. It comes after a man dies after wife runs him over in car park in 'tragic accident'.

Locals reported feeling the quake in Gairlochy, Fort William, Roy Bridge, Morvich, Inverinate and Glenshiel. One resident said on Facebook: "Felt it in Muirshearlich. Sounded like a big helicopter flying very low over the house. The house shook and there was a boom noise."

Another commented: "Heard it the house shook thought it was the quarry blasting." A third person wrote: "Felt it thought it was steam train." Someone else added: "I heard something, thought it was thunder."

Another resident added: "Yes. The house was shaking and rattling. I thought my washing machine had malfunctioned." It comes after experts warned there has been an increase in UK seismic activity.

So far, there have been more than 100 earthquakes this year - with at least nine recorded in just one week, reports Independent. One of the earlier quakes to be recorded that week was in Dorrington, Shropshire, on July 21. The magnitude was listed 1.1, with a depth of 9km.

Sergei Lebedev, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Cambridge, previously offered his insight about earthquakes. He said: “Above three is not a microearthquake - which are very common - and is felt and can cause minor damage so, of course, is a concern."
