James Gunn’s upcoming reboot of Superman has officially broken the record for the highest-grossing solo Superman film in the United States. As of July 29, it has grossed $292.4 million, surpassing the $291 million total Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel earned in 2013. This record, tracked by Box Office Mojo, capitalizes his 2013 adaptation of the film. This news further solidifies the success of the newly released DC film starring David Corenswet.

Superman acts as the starter for WC’s new DC universe, as the prior DCEU ended its run in 2023. Despite facing competition during the summer from ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ the film continues to pull in large audiences in America.

With international grossing results sitting around $214.1 million, Superman has only reached $506.5 million. This is lower than Man of Steel’s overseas earnings of $379 million, and a worldwide total of $670.1 million. Some of the lower international turnout has been attributed to prevailing anti-American sentiment in various regions, according to director James Gunn.

Regardless of those factors, Superman is now claiming the title of the highest grossing standalone Superman film in domestic history, surpassing not only Man of Steel, but also Superman Returns (2006) and all of Christopher Reeve’s classic films both. However, the global record is still held by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $874.3 million.

Gunn’s Superman has, however, been well received as a new addition, scoring 83% with critics and 91% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing both Man of Steel and prior entry installments. Along with the film’s reception, their performance at the box office is promising augurs a good DC transformation on the big screen.
