New Delhi: A new image and video generator, Grok Imagine, has been launched by xAI, the artificial intelligence corporation founded by Elon Musk, and is now available to SuperGrok and Premium+ X subscribers through the iOS app. The tool enables the users to convert text or image prompts into quality images and 15-second videos with native audio.

The difference with Grok Imagine is that it has a setting called the spicy mode, which allows users to create sexually explicit or semi-nude content reported by CNBC. Some explicit cues are moderated and covered up with blurs, but users have managed to produce semi-nude images with the tool. Nevertheless, despite these guardrails, there is the focus and criticism of the presence of NSFW features.

Spicy Mode raises eyebrows

The spicy mode also exists, as it was disclosed when xAI employee Mati Roy wrote a now-deleted post about it on X. The creation of adult content using the tool falls in the trend of xAI to push boundaries, as evident last month with the introduction of an AI anime companion that has hypersexual attributes.

Despite the fact that the platform imposes certain restrictions on explicit content, there is still a fear of its abuse. TechCrunch says celebrity-based prompts such as trying to draw Donald Trump as pregnant cause restrictions, and only altered or watered-down images appear, such as having Donald Trump holding a baby.

User interface and quality are evolving

The image quality is quick and sometimes impressive, although the visuals are not flawless. The uncanny valley is a common trap with human figures with waxy skin and strange expressions. The tool is, however, unique in the sense that it has a smooth user interface as well as the generation of images as one scrolls through.

Musk asserts that the model is becoming better every day. Grok Imagine has now put xAI in direct competition with OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Runway, to name a few of the leading AI media companies. It is yet to be seen whether its boundary-breaking strategy will be a success or will lead to the backlash.
