RBI On Bank Notes: The government said in Parliament that keeping in mind the transaction needs of the public, RBI will ensure that the number of notes of all denominations remains available in a balanced manner.

Government On 500 Rupees Notes: It was claimed in many media reports that 500 rupee notes will stop coming out from ATMs. The Finance Ministry has given clarification on this. The government said in Parliament that keeping in mind the transaction needs of the public, RBI will ensure that the number of notes of all denominations remains available in a balanced manner.

RBI's instructions to banks:

To ensure easy access of people to small value notes, RBI has directed all banks and white label ATM operators to: Ensure the number of Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes to 75 percent by 30 September 2025, and increase their number to 90 percent by 31 March 2026.

Are Rs 500 notes being discontinued?

The government's aim is not to ban Rs 500 notes, but to increase the availability of low denomination notes. In response to a question in Parliament, the government clarified that there is no basis for concerns about Rs 500 notes and their withdrawal from ATMs.

Why was this step taken?

This question was raised by members of the Upper House Y. Venkat Subba Reddy and Milind Deora during the Rajya Sabha session on August 5, 2025. It is worth noting that even before this, RBI had instructed the banks to ensure the availability of low denomination notes in ATMs, so that the general public does not face any problem in day-to-day transactions.
