In a remarkable show of compassion and collaboration, Anant Ambani’s Vantara initiative has stepped forward with a pioneering solution that aims to balance public sentiment, Matha’s leadership, and animal welfare in the case of temple elephant Mahadevi (also known as Madhuri).

Recognising the deep emotional attachment the people of Kolhapur and the Jain Matha have with Mahadevi, while also addressing her urgent medical needs, Vantara has proposed the creation of a dedicated satellite rehabilitation centre in the Nandani area of Kolhapur, a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

This proposed centre reflects Vantara’s commitment to care, science-backed rehabilitation, and respect for tradition. It will be developed in close coordination with the Jain Matha and the State Government, following consultation with the High-Powered Committee and aligning with international standards in elephant care.

Anant Ambani’s Vantara is setting a precedent for how emotional sensitivity, scientific care, and collaborative governance can co-exist to create lasting, compassionate solutions in wildlife welfare. This unique and respectful solution not only prioritises the health and well-being of Mahadevi but also ensures that she continues to remain close to the community that cherishes her.
The proposed site for this rehabilitation facility is to be jointly identified by Vantara, the Jain Matha, and the Maharashtra Government. Once formal approvals and land access are granted, Vantara’s expert team is prepared to begin work immediately in partnership with key stakeholders.

The proposed Kolhapur facility will offer Mahadevi advanced, holistic care with features like a hydrotherapy pond, swimming area, laser therapy room, and 24×7 veterinary clinic. It will also include a covered night shelter, open chain-free habitat, enrichment sand pit, rubberised flooring, and soft sand mounds to support recovery from arthritis and foot rot, ensuring comfort, mobility, and dignity.
