West Bengal: A 25-year-old PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Kalyani in West Bengal's Nadia district died in a hospital on Thursday hours after allegedly attempting suicide. While providing details, the officials stated that the student took the step allegedly due to ragging and harassment, as mentioned in his last social media post. The deceased emphasised that one of his seniors bullied him, adding that the situation was intolerable for him. He also accused the campus administration of ignoring his multiple complaints, the officials stated.

Anamitra Roy, the deceased hailed from North 24 Paraganas and was pursuing a PhD in biology at the IISER. Roy was admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a laboratory, where he was declared dead. The deceased emphasised that he has been dealing with mental health issues since childhood, adding that he was not made for this world.

While reacting to Roy's death, IISER stated that his untimely demise has shocked the college, adding that it was a major loss for the community.

“With deep sadness and grief, we announce the untimely and tragic demise of our PhD student Mr Anamitra Roy on August 8, 2025, at AIIMS, Kalyani. We are all in mourning for the passing of a member of our community, who by all apparent markers was doing quite well in academics and was actively engaged with the larger community. We offer our sincere condolences to his immediate family, his friends, and his well-wishers,” the college stated in its post.
