Brothers and sisters share a unique love-hate bond-- they might not like being with each other, but cannot also live apart. And so, to celebrate and cherish this unique relationship and love between brothers and sisters each year Rakhsha Bandhan is celebrated by Hindus across the world. However, over the years this festival has become quite popular among people in India and so people of different faiths also celebrate it with their siblings and with those who they share brotherly or sisterly bonds.
The name Raksha Bandhan is derived from two Sanskrit words— “Raksha” meaning protection, and “Bandhan” meaning bond. It honours the timeless relationship where a sister ties a sacred thread ( rakhi ) on her brother’s wrist, symbolising her love and prayers for his well-being. In return, the brother pledges to protect her for life.
The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, and this usually falls in August in the Gregorian calendar. On this day, families come together, and sisters prepare a decorated thali with roli, rice, sweets, and a rakhi. After performing a small ritual or aarti of her brother, the sister ties the rakhi and offers him traditonal Indian meethais or sweets. In return, the brother gives her a gift and reaffirms his promise of lifelong protection and care.
While traditionally observed between biological siblings, Raksha Bandhan has expanded its meaning over time. Today, it also includes cousins, sister-in-laws ( Lumba Rakhi for Bhabhis), and even close friends, symbolising love and trust beyond blood relations.
